Wow, I finally sat down to write this article that I have been thinking about for quite a while now. Do you ever hear yourself thinking about how much time you have wasted by a lack of self-motivation and getting ready to get ready to work your business?
If you answered no, then this won’t pertain to you and you are obviously gifted well above the norm. As for the rest of us, the 99.99%, when starting out or been at it for years that dreaded word procrastination seems to hunt us down and make staying on target difficult at best. Should you decide to watch, read or listen to this, I will say thank you as I know there is something else you should be working on, so stay until the end and I will share you some profound ideas to help you with self -motivation and getting ready to get ready.
Are You In The Procrastination Club
For me, it had always been easy to come up with a reason as to why or why not I didn’t do something I had planned or intended on, but the reasons that led me to those decisions would always seem to allude me and therefore the problem would continue to plague me. No sooner would I get super excited about a project or endeavor, be all in, spend a bunch of money, time, energy and even relationships, then once the ether wore off, I’d be thinking and slowly acting on all the reasons not to do the work. Not realizing I was sabotaging my future, I would repeat as necessary to satisfy my pride in that I was going for it, but in reality I was only riding a merry-go-round.
The one thing that I held onto was the knowledge that the only way to fail was to give up and out of shame or conditioning, I would always do enough just to keep my toe in the water. Are you feeling this, do you see this happening with your efforts even if not to this degree? If so, then welcome to the club and be assured that you really are in good company. Now, there are many reasons why we experience procrastination, for our purposes right now I will focus on what I see as the top three. If there others you feel are more apparent than the ones I cover, please feel free to connect with me and share your thoughts.
My Top Three Reasons Why We Procrastinate
First and foremost, I find that most people, in the beginning of their journey as an entrepreneur or when they become self employed, is that their WHY isn’t clear or matured enough within them and therefore causes them to give into limiting beliefs. Like, because what they are doing is so far from their comfort zone that it becomes easier to think about what they want to accomplish rather than push through the fear of the unknown. This is your paradigm working to protect you. You know how when you decide that you are going to do something that will change your life and then talk yourself out of it or say I will start tomorrow, but then when tomorrow gets here you have another reason no to do it. Well after three times of telling yourself you will do something and then don’t your brain doesn’t believe you and then you stop even thinking about what you were going to do in the first place. So if you say your going to do something notice when your mind starts to talk you out of it and press onward, overtime your brain will come around and begin to push you forward.
Next, what I have experienced as well as found in others is that there is a fear of not being enough. Self doubt, caused by social and environmental conditioning have programmed most people to accept that what they are is all they will ever be, that for some reason they are not worthy of the success they desire. Have you ever noticed how in the movies or TV shows most of the bad guys have a tendency to be rich and successful. Sure they offer all the money, the stuff and the girl or guy, but then, when it comes to their personas there is no way that you would ever want to be like them. Believe it or not, this is done on purpose. They appeal to your desire of riches and a life of luxury which keeps you distracted or entertained while at the same time predictive programming sends messages that go straight to your subconscious and against your core beliefs that in turn direct your thoughts to not wanting to be rich because you do not want to be seen as that type person. Awareness ids the key here, once you accept that those who do the programming want you where you are at and how they go about it, then the affect will be minimal, as long as you are paying attention to your thoughts and intuition.
The third reason for this procrastination cycle is the fear of having to hold yourself accountable, you know just in case you succeed. I know it sounds corny but once you produce that first positive result then what, you have to produce another one and then another one and so on. Believe it or not, this can scare the heck out of you enough to where you don’t want to have to do that again. The reason for this is simple, once you begin to realize that the life that you desire and the changes you want for yourself start to become a reality, then you become responsible for maintaining that change because how would it look to everyone who said you couldn’t do it and then you did but then you failed, you know just like they said you would. That’s when that old paradigm kicks in again, causing you to retreat in order to save you from yourself and protect you. Again, overtime and consistency, you will overcome the fear and once you do, you will experience your breakthrough and create real lasting change.
Those are the three top reasons for procrastination that I have found. Just by facing them and keeping aware of their presence, you can combat their affects. Keep in mind that this is an ongoing struggle but well worth the effort if you truly want to transform your circumstances. I hope this information has proven to be of value to you.
